Review SIMS in Bluestown!

Link to Bluestown

De heupwiegende groover Can’t Own What Fades Away sluit het album af.

Ik probeer het gewoon nog een keer. JoosTVD verdient het om groot te worden. In de tussentijd vermaak ik mij prima met deze nieuwe editie van het Grote Muzikale Avonturenboek van JoosTVD!

English:

The big musical adventure book by Joostvd has now, if I have counted well, ready for part 18. And again I continue to be surprised that Joostvd is not yet a big name in our own country, or abroad, is.

Joost van Dinther, also known as The Vanished Dutchman, shows again that we are dealing here with a very self -willed artist, who does not deny his influences but integrates them in his own unique style.

in the opening number of His new album, City of the Pretty, sounds Joostvd like the Dutch Isaac Hayes, or as you want Barry White. Funky symphonic soul with a stubborn sniffing synthesizer.

In Join the Line-Up Joostvd goes on the so-known loom swinging tour again where he sounds like Todd Rundgren, who went on the Latin tour. Go with you is a Loom Funky Pop song in which Lome Michael Franks-like vocals are mixed with the tropical Kid Creole style.

The lazy driving and jazzy grooving City of the Mirrorballs betrays influences like Steely Dan and Michael Franks. Waiting for has an intimate ticking, dance away (Roxy Music)--like, ticking rhythmbox in an attractive floating ballad, which is packed a warm synthesizer blanket.

After the cheerful hopping jazzy groover the urge follows legends. A disturbed Kermis-like instrumental with a transverse sound, which is occasionally reminiscent of Zappa.

Order your Pina Colada as well as you are with the tropical Lome Groover the Kind of Fool I've leg. Joostvd sounds like Tony Joe White who also ventures into the Latin. Celebe is a very fragile play box-like melody in which influences from the Vaudeville and smoky jazz can be found. The Sand. The hip -rocking groover can't own what fades away closes the album.

I just try again. Joostvd deserves to grow up. In the meantime, I am great with this new edition of the large musical adventure book by Joostvd!

Do It Without Love (watch 3)

Right!

The album

Yes it's time to get myself together...or not. I've been recording again, a lot of ideas fell into place so it's been fun and I guess I can come up with a new album next year, but.... it's too predictable now. Yes, I can look back at this great body of work now and be proud, but something is missing... I've been doing that for so many years now, it has become a habit, maybe a nice routine. The latest reviews have giving me exactly the kick in that direction. Break with the mold. Every song has been worth releasing, so no regrets in that department. I just want to experiment, explore more with ideas so I need time and space to do that. I'm gonna break with the "releasing things" to the public every year. Quality comes first.
Will I ever release a song again, you wonder? Only when I'm perfectly and naturally okay with it, but I'm too addicted to songwriting, recording, playing singing to give it all up. Hey TVD, let's not get too serious, nothing is broken. Let's have fun again. I've got the toys and the playground!

Motivation is the key, I can't do it without love.

Tat's a song from the last album. I'm profetic I guess!
This song is about love...without feeling it exactly. Written in a burst of energy on acoustic guitar, I found a fitting melody on the piano and the rest followed.
Just let it flow.....

Everybody, thanks for your support. I'm gonna vanish again, but I'll be back.

Those Little Urgent Things

The Toy Garden

Hai there folks, hope you're all healthy and keeping your safe distances! It's all relative of course, the flat world, the world wide network called the internet gives and takes. I guess, as we all have to adjust to this new behaviour, we all get to our senses together, maybe for once! All of a sudden the health of common people is at stake. How fragile we are. Maybe in my own humble way I've done that since I started writing, playing, recording like a hermit on that desert island. Totally the opposite from my (nightly) work environment though! It's in my toy garden, this kitchensink of sounds, I've been concentrating on the last finishing touches of a brand new baby album. Yes, it's finished I say! So what now? Is it important to let you all know? Yes and no.... it's the music that mostly survives through all the sickness, bad feelings, wrong doings, like a constant healer in the background, just to keep the much needed hopes up. To comfort us. The little things, like that old fat sun on your face. Songs for the shut-ins.

So I will do as "little" promotion as I can: I will let the music speak for itself. I will let you know when of course (spoiler alert! Unashamed promo: somewhere in May 2020), along with a nifty, comfortable video. I'm happy to share these songs, as I did my best.

CU and keep well!
The little things that give comfort...

Next: will this album be accepted and released?

Sent Away, the digital way: Q&A

Ok, here's a Q&A with me and myself.

Gimme proof!

As you can see, you'll be able to stream my new album officially 30 April 2019. Check Spotify regularly, it takes often only three weeks over there.
AMAdea, who again handles the distribution, notes:
"It takes from 3 weeks minimum, to 7 weeks maximum to get it up and selling, once you've given us ALL the info we need. (Usually 4 weeks) Once we send it to them, it's out of our hands and they do what they can to get it imported and active in their service. We push them to get it added as soon as possible, and they always do it as soon as they can."

I was wondering, how many years...?
Ah yes! This is my 40th (!) year in the, ahum, "business" as songwriter, I guess you'd be expecting a "Greatest Hits" or another sort of a celebration box by now, do ya? Well, all of my works have been the "Greatest Kicks" I've had in my life anyway, so I don't need to be that nostalgic. I'm just glad to release more new stuff. Prolific guy!

1998: my first self burned cd!

What can we expect?
Tunes. 12 songs (two instrumental) with my stamp of typical energetic flavor of melodic pop songs with grooves, influenced by jazz, funk, R&B, latin, cabaret and humour.

When will you be famous?
When I'm dead and done of course. Legend in my own time. I'm happy with that, haha.

How do you write?
Mostly with a pen; everything that widens my eyes and opens my mouth I'll write down. I often start with the music, mostly late in the afternoon/ evening. The best songs come, when I've got a positive energy. Explosive jamming. I play around on acoustic guitar or bang on the piano. Combine a few funny or heartfellt sentences, words that fit the vowels. Sometimes it takes 5 minutes, sometimes 2 years to get to the end result.

Tell us about the recording process
Guts, sweat and beers. And a monk's patience.

When can we see that promo?
Ah, I've got two promo's for ya, they'll be up on Youtube in no time. All to watch before bedtime, before the official release, 30th april.

What are the covers and title?
I'll show them all in my next blog.

Well, anything else to declare?
Um, well, yeah, no, um....CU.

Sent away to the shops!

Yep! As you can see, officially 9 may 2018. AMAdea, who handles the distribution, notes:
"It takes from 3 weeks minimum, to 7 weeks maximum to get it up and selling, once you've given us ALL the info we need. (Usually 4 weeks) Once we send it to them, it's out of our hands and they do what they can to get it imported and active in their service. We push them to get it added as soon as possible, and they always do it as soon as they can."

Proof. Can I get a witness?

I'm glad. At first I was worried that something wasn't right. OMG western problems.

Done it again. Worked like a dog. I've finally decided to send my fresh babies away. Why? Because I like them too much!
Yes, I've got a good, strong feeling about these songs. More than ever I took special care to every aspect of the production process (inspiration, songwriting, playing, recording, mixing, mastering).
I think these tunes are a upbeat, sinister, melancholic, desperate but overall fun and groovy bunch, just like me. Ok, sometimes.

After a long, long ping-pong process (the details) of mixing and mastering that is. That was a very intense 3 months period, but I'm glad I didn't overrush things. These songs needed some breathing and I needed some distance from them once in a while. But now it's time I let you enjoy my new grooves.

Well on the distribution side, that will be taken care of by AMAdea (after approval) and it will take about 3 or 4 weeks to hear the album on Spotify and the like. There are so many streaming sites today, so take your pick.

I'll send a few free download links (Bandcamp) to a few of my supporters too, so maybe a few reviews will come up before the official release in may.
Watch this site for more details, news about the design, covers, promo and tell me..what about a title and.... Soon, stay stuned. Promo coming at ya!

The story behind the songs

Every year, a new TVD album appears online. It makes me wonder how? It's like nature's cycle man. Groovy. It comes and it goes. The Vanished Dutchman comes back.

The title "Sagitario"
Well, it's a nice spanish word for the zodiac sign Sagittarius, which is used so many times already in the age of aquarius sixties. Just too pretentious to use.
SaGITARio...

Well and it is my sign. Let's find more about that:
(original source astrology-zodiac signs:)
"Strengths: Generous, idealistic, great sense of humor
Weaknesses: Promises more than can deliver, very impatient, will say anything no matter how undiplomatic
Sagittarius likes: Freedom, travel, philosophy, being outdoors
Sagittarius dislikes: Clingy people, being constrained, off-the-wall theories, details
Curious and energetic, Sagittarius is one of the biggest travelers among all zodiac signs. Their open mind and philosophical view motivates them to wander around the world in search of the meaning of life.
Sagittarius is extrovert, optimistic and enthusiastic, and likes changes. Sagittarius-born are able to transform their thoughts into concrete actions and they will do anything to achieve their goals.
Like the other fire signs, Sagittarius needs to be constantly in touch with the world to experience as much as possible. The ruling planet of Sagittarius is Jupiter, the largest planet of the zodiac. Their enthusiasm has no bounds, and therefore people born under the Sagittarius sign possess a great sense of humor and an intense curiosity.
Freedom is their greatest treasure, because only then they can freely travel and explore different cultures and philosophies. Because of their honesty, Sagittarius-born are often impatient and tactless when they need to say or do something, so it's important to learn to express themselves in a tolerant and socially acceptable way."

Do I believe in this concept? Well I don't think that it matters, it's still fascinating and colourful anyway as I do recognise a few sly streaks.

The process:
1979: I wrote my first lyrics during english classes, but I wanted more. Next to being active as a drummer, I wanted to write my own songs. My then- royal girlfriend sold me her cheap guitar. Cheap didn't matter: the songs dripped from my fingers. I "ate" all the chord progessions I could find (from the Beatles chordbook). I pressed record on any old taperecorder and played...and recorded. Up to often three cassettes a year. From 1998 on I burned cd's. And from 2005 I do it the digital way.
Since then I never looked back, only just a once.
Now I've got better equipment, more flexible tools to work with, better guitars and chops. About time I've grown up!
Still, it amazes me how I can keep it up (!?)

Are you ready for some upbeat songs? Turn them up! Feed me back!

Private Scene
The toilet is my only private scene. To have some real fun, why not start off with an upbeat song? This joyous song hit me, so I hit back. Five minutes of blood, sweat and cheers. While it took little time to write, but arrangment-wise it was an adventure in rhythm patterns and melodies. To my surprise , lyrically it's sort of a sequel to "Unscrew Yourself". Topic: privacy.
Promo video

Happy Pills
Dancable and uplifting ditty, a spontanious funky guitar motive seems to make "fastwriting" almost a sport. Recorded on the spot. F-U-N. Topic: no pills needed.
Promo video

Chameleon Girlfriend
This last, unexpected smooth one is my favourite. Almost did it in a minute. Topic: inspired by a story from the NY times and a few chameleons in my social environment. O, how they adapt.
Hey, there's a little J.J.Cale influence there in the voice.

Speed Turtle
Funny breaks, funny harmonies. Topic: Wake up call. True story. Policeman stopped my car at 4 a.m., because I was driving....too slow, like a turtle. I was listening out loud to the latest mastering of these songs and I guess I forgot to drive fast! Ouch!

Blink
Energentic burst on the piano stirred my blood. Topic: Silicon Valley; what does it to people in general... and are we really human anyway anymore? It brought up a lot of energetic stuff musically and irony. You see, everything can be an inspiration. Listen to that baseline intertwined with that piano motive. Groove.

Roll Into A Ball
Seventies soulful jazzfeel on the Fender Rhodes. I love a shuffle halftime, hanging into a slow groove. Topic: esapism. Artist wants to hide, rolls into a ball. Ken ditches Barbie.

Convenient
Grew up in seventies where black influenced white music a lot: Blue-eyed Soul it was called. Crossover it became. Here's my smooth version of it.

Surprise!
Older song I couldn't finish lyrically at first. Surprise! Is it a surprise that Donald became the Prez?. Topic: trumped. "Look in the mirror Donny!" his wife says. No, it's not meant to be a political song. That temperamental latin flavor certainly helps to keep things on the edge.

Blame Me For The Fun
Slapstick time. Topic: I guess you can spot a bit of the goofy Laurel & Hardy theme (I've watched all those movies and sketches again in recent times) in here. Big fan. Laughs. LOL. Tribute.

Now We Are Talking
One of the first songs I wrote for this album. Give me a spanish guitar and the exotixc sounds of Brazil flow through my fingers. Relaxed, but a challenge to sing (bossa-nova) melodically.

Itch
This took a long time to finish, while it started out simple. A lot of ideas (breaks) in one song is a challenge. As I liked all the melodic contrasts and dynamics, it made its way into this album.

Sagitario
An older idea, which has grown on me since. In case anyone has enough of my voice (I'm not surprised), the last one is an instrumental, a melancholic and melodic one in latin fashion. It started out as a vocal piece, which I think still has potential too, so who knows...

That's my story so far...what's yours?
Keep on rocking!

Well that's it, I'm gonna vanish again...

I just came home from the dentist....(promo 2)

To celebrate the new release "Sagitario"
(13 april 2017!)
I've got another promo for ya
with lyrics:

Private Scene (music & lyrics JoostVD)

I just came home from the dentist
He drilled so many holes in my teeth
I couldn't talk to anyone I couldn't stand the heat
So I went to the only room for some well deserved privacy

I go to the toilet that's my only scene
I go to the toilet you can keep me under lock and key
So if you have a problem don't come to me
Just go to the toilet for your selfreflecting needs

Despite bad weather important matters and public inquiries
In the end we all have to wipe our asses and clean up our filfthy deeds

Oehoe I've got a premonition
Coming up

So if you want a riot go to the toilet
You can be a pilot with a private seat

Tou can talk to anyone but there's no guarantee
The toilet is the only healer for your maladies

Oehoe I've got a premonition
Coming up

O my god....I forgot something
....mmm toilet paper

Show us your new work!

Voila!
It has just been confirmed that the album is in the distribution process. It takes approximately 4 weeks to appear online, but keep a close watch, some online services are very quick. now i'm gonna take a breeeeeaaak.

Proof! Distribution date confirmed
No pressure. Fingers crossed, legs spread. In the meantime I'll keep you updated if there's any change and as I'm working on some visuals, that tasty promo is on its way too. So now you know.
Now let's see where you have to look at this year and the rest of your life.

The artwork.

The original "selfie" pictures have been chosen from some amateurish mobile phone footage, filmed in the bathroom by yours truly. No. 3 became my ultimate frontcover as I liked the welcome sign in my sort of "I invite you all" atitude and the mirrored spotlight above the "starstrucked" me.

1.Here
2.Here!

 3.Here....

Here's the original for the back cover with mirror reflection:

Spotlights!

On the net you can find all kind of photo design editors.
I especially liked the paint department from Lunapic. All kind of echoes of Van Gogh and Kadinsky art that fitted well. Here are a few choices, eyes open or eyes closed:

Close my eyes...
(Starry starry night......) Sagitario!

The title.

I know it's a bit pretentious...to say Sagittarius, so it became

                                                       Sagitario

It's spanish- which sounds so cool- for  (english), boogschutter (dutch). It happens to be my sign. I guess you'll hear a few characteristics of those on the new album. Playful sounding and with the extra bonus of the word siguitario in it. I'll explain in a later blog all bout it.

The final result (or insult).

Well, we've got that title, the art, so here's the design. I was switching between black or white for the background, both choices eventually made it.

Final frontcover result

for disribution purposes only (only one name prohibited)

We've got the frontcover, for the backcover I've chosen the same design but as a whole in contrast.

A few choices

Kadinskish smile

A white background with all the information you need. Now, what does it sound like? Soon...
Final backcover result with songtitles and credits

Covers and Songlist Of The Ballooning Brouhaha (ha-haaaa!)

The Ballooning Brouhaha!

Yes, that's the title of the new album for 2013. Since the last album, Art Decoy, I've been learning a lot more about Pro Tools, smoother recording and especially the finesses of mixing. If everything goes as planned, this album will arrive a lot sooner than the previous one. I've chosen for a shorter album with about 13 songs. Still a lot is happening, that I can assure you. No, it will not be an "Orson Nietes, The Next Day", I don't want to wait that long! Though I think Bowie is still cool.
BTW, thanks for you listeners out there, always grateful for the feedback. You can buy my music of course, but the main thing is the accessibility of my songs. Luckily for me, that's the here and the now, I've got visitors from all over the world who are in for a listen. But who are they? Who are you?
ME....
Well, this baloon will show up in my Grabbelton very soon. The links of the albums are still working, I can see that in the statistics, so I guess it will work out fine.
Ok, it's all about ballooning, so are you ready for the next trip? Soon, soon,.....

 BROUHAHA!
